What it is for

Much of our wildlife dies from causes tied to human activity, and almost no case is ever recorded. Each report adds a data point with a date and a place.

The two photos

The app asks for two photos and each tells a different story. The one of the animal confirms the species. The one of the place explains why it happened — and it is the one most often skipped.

Case 1 · Roadkill

Dead grey fox on the verge — **The animal.** Whole and close up. A phone is enough.

The fox beside the white line of a straight road — **The place.** The verge, the straight, the trees: that is what explains the collision.

Case 2 · Electrocution

Dead raptor at the foot of a concrete pole — **The animal.** At the foot of the pole, where it fell.

Bird caught in the wires of a power pole — **The place.** The pole and the wires. That is where the cause is — and the fix.

Every report goes on the map

Once sent, the case is placed with its date, species and cause. If you report with your account, you can see all of yours under “My reports”.

The centre’s biologists review each one: they confirm the species from the photos and validate the case before adding it.

What we are after is the pattern

One case is a misfortune. A hundred along the same stretch of road are a design problem. With enough reports it becomes possible to point to the pole or the bend that is killing wildlife, and take a fix to whoever can apply it.
